Skills Based Therapy
Therapy goes beyond discussing how the past has impacted you; it's about acquiring practical skills that you can apply today to navigate your life more effectively. I employ a variety of methods (see below) to assist you in developing these skills. I am strong believer that understanding your attachment style can help you identify which tools are most useful for you.
Attachment-Based Therapy
Attachment-based therapy focuses on the bonds between people, particularly between children and caregivers, as well as significant relationships and relational trauma throughout life. It builds on attachment theory, which suggests early caregiver relationships shape emotional and social connections. In therapy, clients explore their attachment styles and their effects on current relationships and behaviors. The goal is to develop secure functioning attachment patterns, enhance emotional regulation and expression, and build healthier, more fulfilling relationships.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a specialized form of cognitive-behavioral therapy aimed at helping individuals effectively manage intense emotions, improve interpersonal relationships, and develop skills for coping with distressing situations. It combines elements of mindfulness, acceptance, and change strategies to promote a balance between acceptance of oneself and the need for change. Through skill-building exercises, DBT helps individuals learn practical techniques for emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness, making it particularly beneficial for those with challenges with big emotions that seems out of control, as well as other mood and behavioral issues that impact life negatively.
Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO DBT)
Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO DBT) is a specialized form of therapy that focuses on treating individuals with excessive self-control, perfectionism, and social isolation. Unlike traditional DBT, which emphasizes emotion regulation and distress tolerance, RO DBT targets excessive self-control and emphasizes the importance of flexibility, openness, and social connectedness. It incorporates elements of mindfulness, acceptance, and dialectical thinking to help individuals loosen rigid patterns of behavior, develop more adaptive responses to social cues, and enhance their ability to connect with others. RO DBT aims to foster psychological flexibility and improve overall well-being by addressing the underlying issues related to overcontrol.
Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT)
Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) is a psychotherapeutic approach primarily used to treat individuals with extreme over and undercontrolled emotional styles and other related conditions. It focuses on enhancing the capacity for mentalization, which is the ability to understand one's own thoughts and feelings as well as those of others, especially in the context of interpersonal relationships. MBT aims to help individuals develop a more nuanced understanding of their emotions and behaviors by exploring the underlying mental states driving them, such as thoughts, intentions, and beliefs. Through a combination of interventions designed to promote reflective thinking, MBT helps individuals improve their emotional regulation, enhance their interpersonal skills, and foster more stable and fulfilling relationships.
Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy (PACT)
The Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy (PACT) is an integrative method developed by Dr. Stan Tatkin, focusing on the interplay between neuroscience, attachment theory, and arousal regulation in understanding and improving romantic relationships. PACT therapists work to create secure-functioning relationships by helping couples understand their neurobiological and emotional responses, improve their ability to read and respond to each other’s nonverbal cues, and develop strategies for managing conflict and enhancing intimacy. This approach emphasizes the importance of the couple's shared experiences and interactive patterns, aiming to foster a strong, enduring bond based on mutual trust and support.
